PROFESSIONAL EDGE · FOR STUDENTS
Professional Edge
Build your career while you build your qualification
A postgraduate degree builds knowledge. A career is also built through experience, relationships, confidence and evidence of what you can do.
Professional Edge runs alongside HEA’s Master of Information Technology from the beginning. Bringing together professional preparation, ongoing coaching, employer connections and support to arrange placement with employers recruiting for paid, course-relevant roles while you study.

A different way to use your two years
Professional Edge helps you build professional readiness alongside your academic qualification, so you can begin developing the experience, relationships and evidence that will support your next step before you graduate.
- Prepare for Professional Environments: Receive individual coaching, practical feedback and guidance shaped around your goals, starting point and development needs.
- Paid, Course-Relevant Employment: When you are ready, HEA works with you to arrange placement with employers recruiting for paid, course-relevant roles.
- Learn and Build Connections Through Real Work: Your HEA coach supports you throughout. Once placed, your workplace mentor and HEA academic mentor help you learn within the role, connect the experience with your studies and build relationships across the workplace and wider industry.
- Build evidence and Keep Your Options Open: Bring together your academic work, professional experience, feedback, references and demonstrated capability in a portfolio you can use with that employer or take elsewhere.

How Professional Edge works
01
Prepare
Work with an HEA coach to clarify your career direction, complete your professional profiling and SFIA-aligned capability mapping, and build the communication, workplace and self-presentation skills needed to pursue professional opportunities.
02
Connect
When you are ready, HEA works with you to arrange placement with employers recruiting for paid, course-relevant roles. You take part in the employer’s recruitment process, and the employer decides who it employs.
03
Build and demonstrate
Once placed, support from your HEA coach, workplace mentor and HEA academic mentor helps you connect work with study while building professional relationships, references, evidence of capability and your portfolio.
Paid work. Real expectations.
Roles accessed through Professional Edge are genuine, paid work – not observation-only experience or an unpaid placement.
Participating employers define their needs, select their employees and set the duties, hours and employment conditions.
HEA prepares you, works with you to arrange placement into a suitable role and supports your development throughout the process.
A stronger platform for what comes next
An employer that already knows your work can provide a valuable pathway after graduation.
The professional relationships, relevant experience, references and evidence of capability you build are also yours to take forward—giving you a stronger platform to pursue opportunities with that employer or another, in Australia or your home country.
